Support the Park

There are a couple of simple ways you can support Red Mountain Park and the Friends’ efforts. Our initial mission is to spread the word about the park. The majority of citizens in our area know little about the project and those that have heard about it generally have only a vague idea about the location, size, timeline or proposed features. Educate yourself about the park and you can in turn educate others. Here’s how:

Volunteer with the Friends

Build a Trail!
On the first Saturday of every month we have a public workday out at the park to build and improve the trails we use for group hikes. Since the kudzu and privet have had a 50 year head start, it takes a fair amount of work to keep the trails in good shape. Show up in a 4-wheel drive vehicle and get bonus points. All volunteers receive the opportunity to tell their grandchildren that they helped build Red Mountain Park!

Trail construction is currently underway to improve and expand the 10+ mile trail system connecting historic sites and the scenic Red Mountain ridgeline. We host trail workdays out at the park on the first Saturday of every month from 9am – noon. Volunteers can help clean up and mark the historic trails, learn about the history of the sites, see sites that no one else gets to see yet, and enjoy a beautiful day at the park! Make sure to wear clothes and shoes you don’t mind getting muddy and bring water and a strong back.

Trail days occur on the first Saturday of every month, beginning at 9am. If you would like to help, please email us and we will keep you informed of upcoming opportunities to get your hands dirty.

Chaperone a Hike!
We are always looking for volunteers to help chaperone our public hikes. Groups can range from 30 to 200 so the more guides we have in place, the better we can insure that no one spends the night unintentionally on the mountain. Hike volunteers help with sign-in prior to the tour and support our tour guides by carrying water and first aid supplies, as well as helping guests along the way. Volunteering is a fun way to enjoy the hike and help ensure everyone else’s safety and enjoyment at the same time. If you would like to help, please email us.

Take an Active Role in the Friends Group

2011 has been a transformational year at the park, and we are developing the Friends of Red Mountain Park organization to better accomplish our mission: to promote, enhance, and enjoy Red Mountain Park. If you would like to take an active role in shaping Red Mountain Park, the Friends group can match your skills and interests with the needs of the park.

We welcome all interested parties to join us. The easiest way to take the next step is to email us and let us know what your interests are.

Donate to the Friends Group

Since we are a 501(c)(3), all your donations are tax-deductible. We accept donations at our public hikes and are setting up a PayPal link by which you will be able to contribute online. In the meantime, all purchases made through our Cafe Press store contribute to the Friends.

We are hosting a live music fundraiser on December 9, 2011 at the Bottletree.  Great Book of John, Two Bit Hoodlums, and Delicate Cutters will be playing.  More details to come, but mark your calendar and email us if you would like sponsorship information.
